The chicken nugget was invented at Cornell
Robert C. Baker, currently a food science professor at CALS, conducted research during his time as a student that resulted in several innovative advances in the poultry industry. One of his contributions was the development of a groundbreaking technique for adhering breading to chicken. Additionally, Baker created popular products such as chicken and turkey hot dogs, turkey ham, and the beloved childhood snack, the chicken nugget. Today, students at CALS can walk the same streets and attend lectures in the same halls where Baker's pioneering work took place during the 1950s.
We were the first Ivy League university to admit women
Cornell University holds the distinction of being the first Ivy League university to admit women. In 1870, just five years after the university's founding, Cornell began enrolling female students. Cornell's early commitment to coeducation and gender equality set the stage for the many advances in women's education and rights that followed in the decades to come.
Cornell has a Wilder Brain Collection, which preserves the brains of many notable individuals
Cornell University has a unique collection of human brains known as the Wilder Brain Collection. The collection was started by Dr. Burt Green Wilder, a professor of Comparative Anatomy at Cornell, who began collecting brains for scientific study in the late 1800s. Over the years, the collection grew to include over 1,500 specimens, including brains from notable individuals such as Vladimir Lenin, Simon Bolivar, and Helen Hamilton Gardener. Today, the Wilder Brain Collection is a valuable resource for researchers studying neuroscience, anatomy, and the history of medicine.
Cornell has an underground tunnels system
There's a tunnel between Uris and Olin libraries, but only librarians have access to it. there's also a tunnel that allows you to get from Teagle Hall to Barton Hall. So for those winter days, you can get from one to the other without stepping outside into the cold air
Dragon Day goes up in flames
Dragon Day is an annual tradition at Cornell University that began in 1901. The current iteration of the tradition involves first-year architecture students designing and building a large dragon sculpture, which is paraded around campus on the Friday before spring break. The dragon is typically made from materials such as wood, paper, and chicken wire.
The burning of the dragon is a symbolic gesture meant to mark the end of winter and the beginning of spring. It is also seen as a rite of passage for first-year architecture students, who have spent weeks designing and building the dragon.
Poisonous plants have a place at Cornell
Cornell Plantation includes a Weed Garden and a Poisonous Plants Garden full of plants that are hazardous to livestock. Cannabis was included in these gardens for decades - it was removed in the 1970s when it became a bit too popular amongst students. The garden is used for educational purposes to teach visitors about the dangers of these plants and how to identify them.
