Pioneering pathways
Dartmouth was the first university to create a mentoring program specifically designed to provide undergraduate women the opportunity to perform research with a faculty member in their field of interest. It’s called WISP (Women in Science Program).
the Oldest Collegiate Outdoors Club
Dartmouth College is home to the nation's largest and oldest collegiate outdoors club called the Dartmouth Outing Club (DOC). The DOC was founded in 1909 and has a rich history of promoting outdoor activities and exploration among students. The club organizes a wide range of outdoor trips and activities throughout the year, including hiking, camping, skiing, rock climbing, kayaking, and more.
Keggy the Keg
Dartmouth does not have an official mascot, although the controversial Keggy the Keg, an anthropomorphic beer keg has become an “ingrained part of Dartmouth culture.” Keggy has been the unofficial mascot since the early 2000s and is often seen at Dartmouth sporting events and other campus activities.
1000 Cups of Tea
Tea and cookies are served at 4 pm each weekday at Sanborn Library, home of the English Department. It is estimated that around 1000 cups of tea are served every year!
Polar Bear Swim
Dartmouth College holds an annual as part of its Winter Carnival festivities. The Polar Bear Swim is a well-known tradition where hundreds of students, and sometimes faculty and staff, plunge into the icy waters of Occom Pond. The Polar Bear Swim has become a cherished highlight of Dartmouth's Winter Carnival, an occasion when the campus radiates with excitement and a shared spirit of adventure.
