Understanding Your Self-Worth: Dean's Desk

Your college journey is not about studying a major or acquiring knowledge, it's a transformative experience that shapes your character, relationships, network, and most importantly, your sense of self-worth.

It is very common for students to get super caught up with deadlines, assignments, test scores, and the plethora of components that surround college applications and college life. However, it is crucial that they take just enough care of their emotional well-being as well.

“We need to tell students: That their social and emotional well-being in a postsecondary education environment is as important as being ready for the rigors of the educational or classroom challenges. That they are not defined by an acceptance letter, T-shirt or bumper sticker. That wherever they go, they will be successful and happy and they will be supported.”

Jody Glassman,

Director of University Admissions,

Florida International University

Jody rightly emphasizes that your social and emotional well-being is just as vital as your academic preparedness. The acceptance letter from your dream university may be a significant milestone, a symbol of your hard work and dedication, but it doesn't define your worth. It's not a verdict on your potential or future success. Your self-worth and the way you perceive and conduct yourself should not be tethered to the outcome of a college application. Your self-worth should be a reflection of your unique abilities, talent, dreams, and character, which definitely extends far beyond a single piece of paper deciding the outcome of your applications.

Here is how you can understand and enhance your self-worth:

  1. Self-Reflection: Take time for self-reflection. Take time to understand your own strengths, weaknesses, values, and passions. Reflect on your achievements and experiences to gain a deeper insight into what you are unique and valuable.

  2. Embrace Imperfections: Realize that imperfections are part of being human. Your self-worth isn't about being flawless, it is rather about embracing your flaws, and learning from your mistakes, and understanding that they contribute to your growth.

  3. Set Realistic Goals: One major reason why students often end up questioning their self-worth is because they set the bar too high. <ake sure you're setting achievable goals and celebrating small accomplishments just as much. This will help you build confidence and reinforce the belief that you are succeeding.

  4. Surround Yourself with Positive Influences: It is important that you surround yourself with people who uplift and support you. Having positive influences around can help boost your self-esteem and provide you with the encouragement you need during challenging times.

  5. Seek Personal Growth: You should aim to invest in your personal growth continuously. Whether you do it through education, skills development, or pursuing your passions, self-improvement reinforces your self-worth.

  6. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. We understand that it's a competitive market out there but make sure you treat yourself with the same kindness and empathy that you would offer to a friend. Avoid self-criticism and focus on self-compassion. Avoid comparing your success and growth to that of others.

In the pursuit of knowledge and your passion, keep in mind that it is you who defines your worth and it does not need an external validation in the form of acceptance letters. Embrace your flaws, embrace your imperfections, and embrace your journey. Seek support when needed, and know that wherever you go, your worth remains constant.
