Legacy admissions are crucial to America’s higher education dominance

If American universities want to retain their global dominance in the face of rising competition from China, the United Kingdom, and Singapore, they must not forget where their powerful advantages come from. Legacy admissions are one of those advantages. Legacy admissions — the practice of preferentially admitting the children of alumni — is one of the powerful, tangible characteristics that help foster that sense of community. By going to these schools, you open up opportunities for yourself, and also your family and children.

How Grading Veered 'Off the Mark'

In their new book, Off the Mark: How Grades, Ratings, and Rankings Undermine Learning (but Don’t Have To) (Harvard University Press), Jack Schneider, an education professor at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, and Ethan L. Hutt, an education professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, argue that traditional measures of assessment corrode student learning and heighten inequality. The book explores how our current grading practices evolved, the unintended consequences of those practices and what educators can do to restore assessment to its key purpose: helping students learn.

How college-bound students can apply for scholarships year-round

The first thing every college-bound student should do is fill out a FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Students may qualify for federal and student grants that they don’t have to pay back.

Scholarships can help cut down on tuition as well. You can apply for them year-round and do it for free just by searching them on Google. However, the ScholarshipOwl platform matches students with scholarships, and every time a student applies for one the platform automatically looks for other scholarships that are similar.

Democrats reject Lombardo’s $3.2M funding request for private school scholarships

The inner mechanics of Nevada’s quasi-private school voucher program came under intense scrutiny Wednesday during a nearly 12-hour meeting that ended with Democrats rejecting Gov. Joe Lombardo’s $3.2 million funding request.

In a party line vote, the Interim Finance Committee rejected the governor’s emergency request to allocate $3.2 million of federal covid relief funds to Nevada’s Opportunity Scholarship program.

A must-have checklist for international university students

Many students across India will be preparing to embark on an exciting journey of studying abroad and starting university this fall. As the countdown to departure begins, parents and students alike will be preparing for this significant milestone. As this new chapter approaches, it is essential to ensure that students have everything in order to make a smooth transition.

‘25% increase in Indian students studying in Germany,’ says Ambassador

The highest number of foreign students in Germany are from India with over 42,000 students, German Ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann informed on Thursday. This is an increase of 25 percent within a year. In April, the German Embassy’s Academic Evaluation Centre announced that it would replace the mandate for paper-printed certificates with digital certificates.

Moreover, India and Germany last year, signed an agreement to facilitate two-way movement of students, professionals and researchers, and also address the challenges of illegal migration.

Minimum Wage Gains, Community College Enrollment Losses

A new working paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that community colleges lose students when a state’s minimum wage increases, but that degree attainment rates at these institutions remain mostly unchanged.

The paper, released Monday, notes that there have been almost 400 state-level minimum wage changes between 1986 and 2019. Of those changes, 239 were minimum wage increases of at least 6 percent, and 96 were increases of at least 10 percent.

Because you’re worth it: how universities can prove their value to prospective students

Rising costs and concerns over heavy student debt cast doubt on whether an expensive university education is worth it for some students. Most high-school pupils in the United States still enroll in a higher education institution upon graduation, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). But the percentage has dropped from 68 percent in 2010 to 62 percent in 2021, the data shows.

There are a number of reasons that students may choose a community college or certificate program. Decisions may be based on greater flexibility, lower costs, easier transition into the workforce and more. Universities need to up their game when it comes to proving their value to a new generation – here are some ideas that could help them do this.

UK spent £13m on private schooling for diplomats’ children

The Foreign Office spent £13.8m on sending 514 diplomats' children to private schools in the UK in 2022/23. It also allocated £24.1m to send 1,188 children to schools overseas. This is up from £10.5m spent on UK schools and £21.4m spent on overseas schools in the previous year.

A government spokesperson said the increase reflects the inclusion of legacy International Development Department and Foreign Office staff. The two departments - which had different terms and conditions for staff - were merged in 2020.

There is a long-standing policy to cover fees for children of diplomats who may be posted overseas at short notice or take their children with them to countries where there is no suitable free English language-based schooling.

Nearly all of them are from an underprivileged background, and many of them would be the first graduate in their family. The Government of Tamil Nadu is funding their college education.
