End-of-Year FAFSA Launch Could Cause More Delays, Headaches
The new Free Application for Federal Student Aid will launch by Dec. 31, the Education Department announced Wednesday—dashing the hopes of some that the form, already delayed by three months, would be available before the winter holidays, when students are at home and college offices are closed.
Before Wednesday, the department had only said that the FAFSA would launch at some point in December as part of its broader overhaul of the federal financial aid system. Higher education administrators and college access professionals have pushed the department to give a specific date, which they said would help in gearing up for the revamped application that's supposed to be easier for students to fill out.

As Study Abroad Bounces Back, DU Looks to Expand International Education Opportunities
With the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, study abroad programs around the world took a hit during the 2020-21 academic year. But as countries began to reopen their borders to international travelers in 2021 and 2022, the University of Denver saw its number of students studying abroad begin to rebound.
New data from the Institute of International Education Open Doors study shows that short-term study abroad programs, in particular, are gaining popularity across the country. Open Doors data shows that short-term study abroad increased by 30% in 2021-22, and it is estimated that this number will rise to almost 70% of all study abroad being short-term in the future.
In addition to its many term-length study abroad opportunities, DU offers a variety of short-term and interterm international education programs. For the first time this summer, students will be able to take summer courses via programs in Tokyo, Oxford, and Costa Rica, among other exciting locales.

New initiative furthers U.S. and Indian higher education collaboration and internationalization through digital and knowledge-sharing approaches
Commemorating International Education Week 2023 and marking the importance of global perspectives in education, the University of Denver (DU), with support from the U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai, announces the launch of a new project aimed at furthering higher education partnerships between Indian and U.S. institutions.
Higher education partnerships between the United States and India have grown rapidly in recent years as have the number of students studying and contributing to the U.S. economy. At the same time, Indian institutions desire to be more global through a range of approaches, including student and faculty exchanges; research collaborations; and “internationalization at home.” However, despite this growth and clear interest amongst both Indian and U.S. institutions to expand their engagement, significant variations in both U.S. and Indian higher education institutions pose a barrier to partnerships. They need to develop a shared understanding and knowledge base of regulations, mechanisms, and best practices for collaboration that can ultimately help enhance and scale-up U.S.-India academic partnerships.

The USA is top choice for higher studies, Canada catches up
Almost three lakh students from India are headed to the US for higher education this year, a 35% increase from the last academic year. While the US may have seen a rise in the intake of Indian students, the cost of education and options for residency later on are encouragingT many students to look at Canada.

Health Apps Serve as Student Wellness Maps
When it comes to being online, college students are one of the most well-connected groups, with Pew Research estimating 96 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds own a smartphone.
Some colleges are encouraging students to unplug from their devices for their mental health (Common Sense Media found teens check their phone over 100 times per day on average), but others are leaning into the nature of digital natives by using health and wellness apps.
While some such apps are available off the shelf for individual students or whole campuses to adopt, others are being developed in-house by administrators, staff and students.

SUNY Fredonia launches ‘in-demand’ master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling program
A new master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (CMHC) has been added to graduate program offerings at SUNY Fredonia in response to a growing demand for clinical mental health care counselors.
Virtual open houses for the program’s first cohort will be held in November and December, ahead of the start of classes on Jan. 22, 2024.
“We realized the pressing need in our region and in the state for licensed clinical mental health counselors, and we feel it’s integral to our mission as a state university to help fill that need,” said College of Education, Health Sciences, and Human Services Dean Janeil Rey.
Survey: Course Materials’ Costs Impact Student Success
Annual spending on college course materials fell to a decade low last academic year, due in large part to the continuing shift toward digital materials. But a new study finds that college students remain concerned about course materials’ prices and that many attempt to cut costs in ways that may undermine their academic success.
The report, released today by Affordable Learning PA, the Partnership for Academic Library Collaboration and Innovation, and Bay View Analytics, is based on a recent survey yielding more than 4,300 responses from mostly four-year college students across 14 Pennsylvania institutions. While focused on Pennsylvania, the authors surveyed a comparison group of 500 students from outside the state to paint a picture that is largely nationally representative—and troubling.

Record $30 million raised for scholarships by Harper College Educational Foundation
Harper College’s Educational Foundation has raised a record $30 million through its new scholarship campaign, Inspire, making it possible for the Palatine-based community college to award more scholarships than at any other time in its 55-year-plus history.
Launched in 2020, Inspire surpassed its goal and crossed the $30 million mark in July 2023. The campaign, which has now raised almost $32 million, will continue through June 2024.
“This foundation has been incredible. We have outperformed every campaign goal we’ve ever had,” said Laura Brown, chief advancement officer and vice president of marketing and communications. “I can’t say enough about our board and our donors. Without their leadership, and without our donors caring about this college, we wouldn’t have achieved these great things.”
