Korea unveils five-year plan to boost int’ls

A long-awaited five-year plan to help boost the amount of international higher education students in South Korea has been unveiled by the country’s education minister. In a press conference on August 16, Lee Ju-Ho announced the plan to attract 300,000 international students to the country by 2027 in the wake of its aging population crisis, which has resulted in a “rapid decline” in the number of school-age citizens.

Is the UK losing its appeal as a study destination for international students?

Reports in the press this week have alleged that some of the country’s top universities are offering more clearing places to international students than British applicants this year, and admissions experts have warned that universities are likely to shun domestic students in favor of applicants from overseas who pay up to four times more in fees. Experts in the higher education sector have warned that these changes mean the UK risks losing out to rival English-speaking countries such as the US, Canada, and Australia when it comes to the recruitment of international students.

Empowering Youth for Sustainable Development

As we celebrate International Youth Day, it is imperative to recognize the role of media and information literacy in nurturing green skills among young individuals. By equipping youth with the ability to critically engage with media content and make informed decisions, we empower them to become leaders in sustainable development. Media and information literacy not only enhances their understanding of environmental issues but also enables them to drive change, promote eco-friendly practices, and contribute to a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come.

Two-thirds of colleges are adding online programs, survey finds

The eighth Changing Landscape of Online Education report — from market research firm Eduventures and quality assurance organization Quality Matters— reveals how colleges are adapting to growing student interest in online learning. The CHLOE 8 survey found a similar share of colleges, 63%, are conducting market research to determine which online degrees would be popular among current and prospective students. And 42% of colleges are creating online versions of in-demand on-campus programs.

Report suggests online learning has yet to peak

The annual “Changing Landscape of Online Education” report, released today, polled hundreds of chief online officers at higher education institutions and focuses on the state of online and hybrid leading in higher education. The eighth annual report was conducted by Quality Matters and Eduventures Research, a division of Encoura, a data science and analytics platform. It surveyed the chief online officers on what they experienced over the 2021–2022 academic year.

“The CHLOE 8 report captures the dynamic, uncertain moment after the ‘emergency remote learning’ of the pandemic,” said Richard Garrett, CHLOE co-director, in the report. “The crisis has faded but experience and expectations have changed." While the demand for online education spiked in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, report researchers said they believe the demand has not yet reached its peak.

AI's boost for students and teachers in higher education

The use of artificial intelligence impacts every industry and sector of society, including news, gaming, and fashion. And academia is no exception. Colleges and universities are adapting to new ways of enrolling, teaching, and retaining students with AI technology.

Part of the motivation is that "with fewer college-age students in the pipeline," universities need to "employ even more sophisticated enrollment-management strategies to fill their classes," Best Colleges reported. But while many schools are embracing the new technology, others are wary of its drawbacks.

Population shifts ‘necessitate international education rethink’

Paul Spoonley, a New Zealand-based sociologist and emeritus professor at Massey University, said countries such as Australia and New Zealand, which had experienced a “golden age of international education” before Covid, will need to change their approach as source countries become increasingly reluctant to send youngsters abroad.

This would particularly apply to China, which had tipped into a demographic “deficit” as the fertility rate in its major cities “plummeted” to one child per woman.

First-year study abroad gains popularity in the US

A growing number of US universities are asking their freshmen to study abroad, calling it a transformative experience that should not be routinely reserved for students in their later years. The practice, while still relatively rare in the US, has been expanding in recent years at larger institutions that include Florida State, New York, Northeastern, and Syracuse universities, as well as smaller campuses such as Bard, Colby, Kenyon, Marist, Skidmore and Wheaton colleges.
