Networking For College Admissions

In this competitive landscape that values personalized engagement and student character, students need to consider unique approaches for standing out. Networking is emerging as a critical tool for success. The Harvard Business Review specifically highlights the long-term value of networking skills, particularly for first-generation college students.

Shriya Boppana, a Carnegie Mellon University alum, presents a compelling case for the power of diverse networking strategies. Her approach was multifaceted, encompassing tours, admissions events, and strategic LinkedIn outreach. Shriya emphasizes the importance of face-to-face interactions and timely online messaging. Her strategy was about making connections as well as about understanding the cultures of her target schools. "It's crucial to be proactive and adaptable in your networking methods," Shriya explains. "Each platform and interaction offers a unique opportunity to present yourself and understand what different colleges offer."

Counselors welcome the Better FAFSA. But its delay might have consequences for students

Last week, the U.S. Department of Education announced its shorter, simplified Free Application for Federal Financial Aid, called the Better FAFSA, will be released by Dec. 31 and be available through June 30. The form, which determines eligibility for federal money and scholarships for college, is typically released in October. The Education Department said the delays are because it took some time to simplify the form.

To help make the complex form easier for students and families to fill out, the FAFSA will be narrowed down to fewer than 20 questions instead of more than 100. Advocates have called for a simpler form for years, and the Education Department expects an increase in students qualifying for federal aid because more students are expected to fill it out. But the delayed release means counselors have less time to work with more students.

Two new programs launched to attract international students for jobs in Germany

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is launching an initiative to recruit international students and graduates and qualify them as future specialists for the German labour market. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is supporting the new initiative with a total of almost 120 million euros until 2028.

“Germany is in third place in the global ranking of the most popular countries to study in. For a large number of international students, the good prospects of remaining in Germany later in their careers have already been a key factor in deciding in favour of Germany as a place to study in the past.
