Global Higher Education Bulletin: 26th August 2023

1 in 4 students never finish their college applications. Why?

Almost 1 in 4 prospective students, 24%, began at least one college application but wound up not submitting any during the 2018-19 application cycle, according to an August working paper published by Brown University’s Annenberg Institute. Research indicates the essay portion of many applications is a sticking point. Students who completed a valid essay response were 51 percentage points more likely to hit submit than those who did not, at 94% versus 43%.

US public universities refute claim they are amply funded

Entering the new academic year, US public colleges and universities are fighting a new round of criticisms that they are fuelling the nation’s debt crisis by charging too much in tuition fees. “Colleges are well funded, at least relative to the past,” said an author of one of the data reviews, Andrew Gillen, a senior policy analyst at the Texas Public Policy Foundation. “Claims that higher education is underfunded should be met with skepticism.”

One expert who has been rebutting the critiques of higher education spending, Robert Toutkoushian, a professor of higher education at the University of Georgia, said comparisons to state revenue provide important context. But even straight-dollar measures of state spending on higher education show little if any growth across the US in recent decades, for a sector that faces unusually difficult structural demands.

Education Department settles with 5 law schools that it said improperly distributed financial aid

The U.S. Department of Education announced Thursday it struck settlement agreements with five law schools that the agency said improperly disbursed federal financial aid to students in unaccredited programs. Albany Law School, in New York, Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School, Brooklyn Law School, New England Law Boston, and New York Law School improperly distributed almost $2.9 million in Title IV money between July 2017 and June 2022, the Education Department said.

Under the settlements, the five institutions will reimburse the Education Department’s “expected loss” for the allegedly misused funds, and three of them will pay fines, the highest being $120,000. An Education Department spokesperson said Thursday the colleges are not reimbursing the agency for the full $2.9 million, but did not provide a precise figure.

According to a report, Australia, Canada, the UAE, and the US are the most popular choices for Indian students looking for educational degrees outside the country.
