Dartmouth Launches New Research Institute Focused On Black Diaspora

Dartmouth College has launched the Institute for Black Intellectual and Cultural Life (IBICL), a research center focused on the study of the Black diaspora. The institute is part of "Toward Equity," a three-year strategic plan to improve Dartmouth's diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

Dr. Shontay Delalue, senior vice president and senior diversity officer at Dartmouth, said that centering on the Black community is meant to uplift individuals from that community, create a hub of creativity, and work against the hundreds of years of systemic policies that have harmed the Black community.

Internationalisation’s new goals are political, not academic

Higher education and science in Russia have been connected to the international community in different ways in different historical periods. We have moved from close ties to almost complete autonomy and isolation, and from cooperation and integration to a quest for our own national identity.

The internationalization of science and education has traditionally been mostly an issue for government policy; only recently has it moved to the institutional level. However, this period didn’t last long and today the Russian higher education system has pivoted back to one of centralized control over research and education as well as its international activities.

Our core audience of students is getting smaller and there’s a lot of supply in the market, but decreasing demand,” said Roth in a recent appearance on 580-Live on MetroNews Flagship station WCHS Radio in Charleston.

Biden administration forgives $39 billion in student debt for more than 800,000 borrowers

The Biden administration announced Friday it would automatically forgive $39 billion in student debt for 804,000 borrowers.

The relief is a result of fixes to the student loan system’s income-driven repayment plans. Under those repayment plans, borrowers get any remaining debt canceled by the government after they have made payments for 20 years or 25 years, depending on when they borrowed, and their loan and plan type.

To bring people over the line for forgiveness, the Biden administration counted payments for borrowers who’d paused their payments in certain deferments and forbearances and those who’d made partial or late payments.

University scholarships are still available for both incoming and continuing students, said Sarah Kasabian-Larson, director of scholarships and financial aid at Central Michigan University.

The application still allows students to receive federal direct loans and Pell Grants, she said. The latter can be important in being awarded need-based institutional scholarships. "We are in July, but it's not too late for students to file their FAFSA whatsoever," Kasabian-Larson said.
