China’s global education strategy and the growing divide between East and West

Debate around Confucius Institutes (CIs) has resurfaced in the UK. Two weeks ago, Rishi Sunak rescinded a pledge made last year to issue a complete ban on CIs, but he confirmed that sponsorship of Mandarin learning in schools will be dropped. Instead, a new program providing British civil servants with “China expertise in the tech and military sectors” will be introduced from 2024. Britain’s recent hostility toward CIs is representative of growing criticism among Western powers of the Chinese Communist Party’s involvement with educational institutions abroad.

Faculty members and colleges plan summer AI upskilling

As the pace of progress in AI writing tools accelerates, faculty members across the summer spectrum face a shared challenge: How can they upskill in AI for teaching and learning—fast? Some academics and institutions are offering AI faculty workshops or, in the words of Anna Mills, English instructor at the College of Marin, “safe spaces where we don’t feel overwhelmed by the fire hose of [AI] information and hot takes.” In these summer faculty AI workshops, some plan to take their first tentative steps in redesigning assignments to recognize the AI-infused landscape. Others expect to evolve their in-progress teaching-with-AI practices.

However, degrees don’t have to be students’ only postsecondary options, she said. Study abroad expert thinks you should care about currency fluctuations; here's why

Studying abroad can be an enriching experience, academically as well as culturally. For an Indian student planning to study in the US or UK, it is important to factor in currency fluctuations, which can affect the overall budget. Five years back, in May 2018, a US dollar was equal to Rs 67.72 – today a dollar is Rs 82.3 – a change of almost 20%! In the past 1 year, from May 2022 to May 2023, the US dollar has gained 6% on the Indian rupee. Thus, from an Indian perspective, you need to spend more for the same service. A more expensive dollar means that the cost of funding studies, as well as expenses overseas, has also gone up. These are points to consider if you are funding your education via a loan, as many students do.
