New high-tech lab is the first of its kind in Scotland
A specialist laboratory that uses state-of-the-art equipment for the study of behavior, cognition, and brain function across the lifespan has opened at the University of Stirling.
The first of its kind in Scotland, the facility provides a welcoming environment to people of all ages, which will allow researchers to study cognition, health, and well-being in everyone from infants to older adults.
The new lab has a range of specialist equipment which is vital in the study of people who can’t effectively communicate, like infants who have not yet learned to talk.

Continuing and Professional Education Invites Applications for ‘Build Your Own Career’ Scholarships
UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education, or CPE, is accepting applications through May 31 for its new “Build Your Own Career” Scholarship, a program aimed at expanding access to CPE’s career-enhancing programs.
“Professional education creates opportunity,” Dean Susan Catron said. “Unfortunately, these kinds of applied, career-focused programs and certificates aren’t eligible for financial aid, so students must self-fund their education. The ‘Build Your Own Career’ Scholarship helps ensure that all adults, regardless of socioeconomic status, have access to life-changing professional development opportunities.”

Immigration Central: Canada to Deport 700 Indian students due to fake admission letters
Nearly 700 Indian students who moved to Canada in 2018-19 on student visas are facing deportation because their admission letters were found to be fake. Most of these students had sought the help of a Jallandhar-based unlicensed immigration consultant that has now shut shop.
The fraud was discovered when the students applied for permanent residency in Canada and the Canadian Border Service Agency (CBSA) examined the documents based on which their visas were issued and found that these letters were fake.
International students from Nigeria are highly valued by UK schools because of their energy towards academics —Shiroye
“Statistics show that between 2019 and 2022, the number of student visas issued by the UKVI rose by over 760 percent. This accounts for over 59,000 Nigerians who traveled to the UK on a student visa in 2022 alone compared to 6,798 in 2019. Feedback from partner universities also confirms that the most impressive set of encounters with international students come from Nigerians. Hence, Nigerian applicants are highly valued as they sustain that energy even in their academics when they arrive in the UK.” says Dr Olukayode Shiroye is the country director of the Nigerian branches of AHZ Associates.

India-UK Free Trade Agreement: Impact on students planning to go abroad for higher education
Recently, India and UK opened a new round of discussion for the Free Trade Agreement. Historically, UK and India have had strong trade ties, with the UK being India’s second-largest trading partner in the EU and India being the UK’s second-largest market for services outside of Europe. However, negotiations between the two countries for a free trade agreement have been ongoing since 2018, and progress has been steadfast, which will lead to fruition soon with the new UK government.
One of the main points in the negotiations has been India’s demands for greater access to the UK’s labor market and education sector. India has been pushing for the UK to relax its visa restrictions for Indian workers and more approvals for Indian students.

UArizona announces new mobile crisis team, University Safety website
A new mobile crisis team, with the goal of de-escalating tense situations and providing mental health services, is in development at the University of Arizona, President Robert C. Robbins said at a virtual University Safety Briefing on Friday.
"We know that individuals on campus in a crisis often have UAPD as the only option to call but may be better served by a counselor. This mobile crisis team will meet that need," said Robbins, who was joined at the briefing by Steve Patterson, UArizona interim chief safety officer, and 17th U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona, Laureate Professor of Public Health.

International students deterred by high cost of living
Rising costs of living are affecting the mobility of international students, and many are reconsidering decisions to study abroad, according to a survey of 21,000 students in 108 countries conducted by IDP Connect, an educational marketing and student recruitment firm.
The survey, ‘Emerging Futures3’, carried out between February and March 2023, examined the attitudes and intentions of students and found that financial concerns were uppermost in students’ minds. Key findings showed that 81% of the students were looking for opportunities to work part-time during their studies to help them to afford their stay in host countries, while 51% said they were reconsidering their decision to study overseas due to recent increases in the cost of living.
India will be Coursera’s largest global market by the end of 2023: India and APAC MD
India is set to become the largest market for Coursera by the end of 2023, surpassing the US, Raghav Gupta, Managing Director, India and APAC, said. This comes at a time when upskilling and higher education platforms continue to grow and raise more funds in India, despite the ongoing funding winter.
“Based on the pace of growth, we think India will be larger than all of our markets by the end of this year. And this is all coming from our B2C platform where individuals learn. Then, over the last many years, we worked with businesses, governments and campuses, too. And this is now about 7,000 institutions,” Gupta says.
