Visa changes part of plan to attract international students

The South Korean government has rolled out a raft of new measures easing visa regulations, particularly to universities in regional areas of the country beset by population decline and a move to the major cities.

The easing of visa rules for students comes in advance of soon-to-be-announced new measures to attract more international students, tentatively called ‘Study Korea 3.0’. The easing of immigration rules is important for attracting students from abroad and is accompanied by new rules to make it easier for workers to enter the country and upgrade their skills. This could also have the knock-on effect of making South Korea a more attractive destination for international students.

US Supreme Court decision a concern for all committed to inclusive global education

Supreme Court decision to essentially eliminate affirmative action – specifically race conscious admissions – should be of concern for all who are committed to advancing inclusive student success through equitable access to global education opportunities. For international students studying at selective universities, there will be fewer opportunities to connect with domestic students of colour, thus limiting the very cross-cultural engagement and dialogue that enhance the educational experience for both international and domestic students.

Young University Rankings 2023: results announced

Australia’s young universities have outperformed Germany’s for the first time in five years to become the world’s highest-scoring budding institutions on average.

With an average overall score of 53.0, Australia comes up on top when considering countries that have had four or more institutions continuously ranked in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings since 2019. The rankings, which include universities that are not older than 50 years, sees Germany drop to second place this year with an average score of 52.5. The United Arab Emirates climbs up to the third spot with 51.2, overtaking Italy and France.

IELTS: Unlocking global opportunities through language proficiency

“Knowing how to speak, read, and write in English is vital to hit the ground running in a new country and culture. Furthermore, nearly every university abroad has many foreign students. Their presence enriches not only those who are native to a country but also other international students. To benefit from a diverse student body, everyone must be able to speak to one another in a common language, namely English,” says Vijay Balakrishnan, Senior Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer, Cambridge University Press & Assessment, India & South Asia. For these reasons, before enrolling students, foreign universities want to assess how students fare in one of the world's leading English proficiency exams: the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

3 leading UK universities challenging the gender bias within engineering

Challenging gender bias within engineering programmes and jobs is crucial for creating a more inclusive and equitable society. Historically, engineering has been perceived as a male-dominated field, leading to limited opportunities and representation for women. The numbers vary in different specialisations but only 9% of mechanical engineers are female and women make up only 35% of environmental engineers and 18% of software developers. Universities are breaking down barriers and promoting inclusivity to tap into the full potential of talented individuals, drive innovation, and build a more equitable future. Here are the three leading schools that challenge gender bias within their engineering departments: The University of Huddersfield, Heriot-Watt University, and Swansea University.

MU honors race-based scholarships awarded before affirmative action strike-down

The Supreme Court’s decision to discontinue affirmative action policies for college admissions will not impact race-based financial aid awarded to MU students before June 29, 2023. Scholarships that consider race will no longer be offered starting with the freshman class of 2024.

The Supreme Court struck down affirmative action programs at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina on June 29, 2023. This Supreme Court decision will not impact the scholarship money awarded to returning students or freshman who start in fall 2023. As long as these students continue to meet the academic criteria for their race-based scholarships, MU will honor the money it awarded students as long as they meet the academic criteria, according to Christian Basi of the MU News Bureau.

Charles Barkley To Leave $5 million For Black Student Scholarships At Auburn University

The Supreme Court of the United States struck down affirmative action programs in education, essentially ending the consideration of race in the college admissions process. The ruling could have long-lasting effects on the racial makeup of, not only the current landscape of college campuses, but also decades of landmark cases involving affirmative action.

Now, NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley declared that he is amending his will to leave $5 million to Auburn University and will earmark the funds specifically for Black students.

“In my will, I am leaving Auburn $5 million,” Barkley said Friday, according to AL.com. “I’m going to change it to be just for scholarships for Black students. That’s just my way of trying to make sure Auburn stays diverse."
