Yale Reaches Agreement on Affirmative Action Case

A lawsuit against Yale University over its affirmative action policies was dropped on Thursday after the university agreed to make significant changes to its admissions policies. The agreement stipulates that Yale make some of the most significant and wide-reaching admissions policy changes to be spurred by the Supreme Court’s ruling so far, encompassing not only race-conscious admissions but financial aid and data transparency as well.


 

Even at Harvard, academic efforts to combat ChatGPT are mixed

Entering a year in which ChatGPT has been shown to be a formidable disruptive threat to its curriculum, Harvard University has put a priority on trying to make its offerings “AI-proof”. The verdict so far from its dean of undergraduate education: there’s still a way to go.


“I’m finding that the transition is more uneven than I would have guessed,” Amanda Claybaugh, a professor of English, said of her efforts to prevent Harvard students making AI-powered sprints through their coursework. “Some of our faculty have already reimagined their teaching entirely, while others still haven’t even tried ChatGPT.”


 

Brown University to review legacy, early decision and test-optional admissions

Brown University will review its admissions practices related to early decision and legacy applicants, as well as consider if it should require entrance exam scores or continue its test-optional policy. Christina Paxson, president of the Ivy League institution, told the campus Wednesday that the university formed a committee to consider changes to its admissions policies. The committee — which includes Brown administrators, trustees and faculty members — will make recommendations before the spring term next year. Any changes to the university’s practices would take effect before next year’s admissions cycle.


 

UAF Awards Scholarships for 2023-24 Academic Year

The University of the Aftermarket Foundation (UAF) announced it has awarded 378 scholarships to students throughout the country, totaling $640,250 for the upcoming school year.


Those awarded with scholarships will be attending a two-year or four-year college or university or an accredited automotive vocational program. While the majority of the students are studying to become collision, mechanical or heavy-duty repair professionals, others are pursuing degrees in such fields as business, engineering and IT/cybersecurity that will lead to a career in the automotive aftermarket. In addition, many named scholarships were awarded on behalf of a variety of individuals and organizations.


 

Simpson College president hits ground running with scholarship announcement

Simpson College President Jay Byers is riding the momentum of increasing enrollment and new programs and projects to prioritize building brand, community, and bright futures. Byers, well-known as the president and CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership, was announced Simpson’s new president in July.


Byers, alongside Vice President for Enrollment Leigh Mlodzik, announced two new full-tuition scholarship programs Thursday morning, saying they will ensure more Iowans will find Simpson to be an accessible avenue to a quality education.


Simpson’s $100K Promise will provide full-tuition scholarships to admitted students whose family’s adjusted household income is $100,000 or less. It expands upon the college’s previous promise program, which capped incomes at $60,000.


 

Indian students seek higher education in diverse global destinations

A recent report by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has highlighted that a significant number of Indian students has chosen to pursue higher education abroad between 2017 and 2022, with their count reaching an impressive 1.3 million. This data underscores a noteworthy trend in the aspirations of Indian youth, as they increasingly seek educational opportunities beyond their home country. The MEA report further indicates that these students have been drawn to academic institutions in 79 different countries worldwide, reaffirming India’s global presence in the field of international education.


 

5 Most Preferred Education Destinations Amongst Indian Students

In a five-year span from 2017 to 2022, a staggering 1.3 million Indian students went abroad to pursue higher education, according to Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) data. The ministry's data further revealed that Indians are studying in 79 countries across the world. The top five destinations for Indian students are the United States, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Australia and Saudi Arabia.


 

Survey finds students are becoming more comfortable and satisfied with online learning

A new survey conducted among over 27,000 university students in the UK who are learning to some extent through online delivery reveals that satisfaction with digital learning has improved since 2020. Students are now more able to access more support from their institution, and making use of assistive technologies while they learn. International students are particularly likely to be using assistive technologies. Satisfaction with the digital experience is high, though most students prefer to learn on campus, whereas, 26% were learning both on campus and through digital course content delivery.
