McGill students are credited with inventing ice hockey in the late 19th century, and the university's hockey program remains one of the most successful in the country, with multiple national championships to its name. The inventor of basketball, James Naismith, was a McGill alumnus, having earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1888.


Competing at every Olympic Games since 1908

A former McGill student has competed at every Olympic Games since 1908!! According to the school’s athletics department, “143 McGill students or grads have gone on to Olympic glory over the past century.”


Mother of 6 universities

The founders of 6 major universities were among the alumni of McGill University. Those universities are the University of British Columbia, Victoria University, University of Alberta, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and Dawson College. This makes McGill the mother of these universities, quite literally.


City underneath

Montreal's Underground City, also known as the "RÉSO," is an extensive network of tunnels, passageways, and shopping complexes that spans over 18 miles beneath the city's streets. The Underground City is home to a wide range of shops, restaurants, hotels, museums, and other attractions and is connected to many of Montreal's major subway stations and office buildings. It is estimated that over 500,000 people pass through the Underground City every day, making it one of Montreal's most popular destinations.


The Most Rhodes Scholars

Of the many graduates that have come out of McGill over the years, 139 have been/are Rhodes Scholars, the most held by a university in Canada. McGill also boasts three prime ministers, nine Oscar winners, three Pulitzer Prize winners, and three astronauts.


The First Fraternity For Gay Men In Canada Was Founded At McGill

The first fraternity for gay men in Canada, Delta Lambda Phi, was founded at McGill University in 2006. Delta Lambda Phi is a social fraternity that was established with the mission of providing a safe and supportive community for gay, bisexual, and progressive men, as well as promoting diversity and equality.


The Redpath Museum Is The Oldest Of Its Kind In The World

The Redpath Museum at McGill University is Canada's oldest natural history museum and the oldest of its kind in North America. It was founded in 1882 with a donation from Peter Redpath, a prominent Montreal businessman and philanthropist, and originally housed his personal collection of geological and anthropological specimens.


Today, the museum's collection has expanded to include over two million objects spanning a wide range of fields, including geology, paleontology, zoology, and ethnology. The collection is particularly strong in the areas of minerals, fossils, and First Nations artifacts.
