Fun Facts

Follow the yellow ceiling for a sheltered path through NUS

Back in the 70s, when the Kent Ridge campus was built, the yellow ceiling was meant to act as a visual indicator of the sheltered path through the entire campus. While this is still mostly true, a few of the yellow ceiling paths end abruptly as some of the newer buildings do not follow it anymore.

Your exam scripts are not returned to you, but they’re not thrown away either!

NUS policy states that exam scripts have to be kept for at least a semester in case an audit needs to be done. Once the semester is up, the lecturers are free to shred all the scripts to oblivion. However, a lot of lecturers now release an exam summary discussing the solutions and common mistakes.

A request for alumni

NUS’ current archives are very incomplete, a result of materials being lost to flood or fire, or simply because files were not archived in the first place. As a consequence, key information relating to NUS’ history is missing. Therefore, NUS wants to now ensure alumni pass on any documentation they have related to their time in the organization.

Abbreviation Wonderland

NUS is a place full of abbreviations. It may definitely seem overwhelming at the start, but you’ll get used to it! Some examples are:

  1. BIZ - School of Business

  3. FASS - Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

  4. UTOWN - University Town

  5. NUSSU - NUS Students’ Union

  6. Remnants of the Berlin War

Connections to the Berlin War

Among the many highlights of NUS, the two slabs of the Berlin Wall behind Tembusu College hold a significant place. The panels are a gift to Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Germany’s Mr. Elmar Prost and his building materials company, to mark 50 years of diplomatic relations between Germany and Singapore.
