The Russell Group of universities trace their origins back to 1994 at the Hotel Russell in London. This meeting brought together 17 British research universities - Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Imperial College London, Leeds, Liverpool, London School of Economics, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Oxford, Sheffield, Southampton, University College London, and Warwick, who originally met at Hotel Russell shortly before meetings of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals in nearby Tavistock Square, close to the University of London buildings and, particularly, Senate House. Warwick being the exception, the founder members of the group were all universities prior to World War I.

This gathering of universities recognized the need for a unified voice and platform to address the specific challenges and opportunities they faced. The aim was to create an alliance that could advocate for the interests of research-intensive universities, promote collaboration among its members, and highlight the importance of research in higher education.

In March 2012, it was announced that four universities – Durham, Exeter, Queen Mary University of London; and York – would become members of the Russell Group.

Since its formation, the Russell Group has expanded to include 24 prestigious institutions. Its membership is by invitation only, and universities are carefully selected based on strict criteria that include a strong research base, excellence in teaching, a comprehensive range of academic disciplines, and significant contributions to knowledge exchange and innovation.

The Russell Group universities collectively represent a diverse range of institutions that are now united by their commitment to research and desire to shape the future of education in the UK and beyond. What is the difference between Russell Group and Red-brick universities?

The main difference between Russell Group and Red-brick universities lies in their historical development and membership criteria.

Historical Development:

Red-brick universities refer to a group of universities in the United Kingdom that were established in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were founded as civic universities in industrial cities, such as Birmingham, Liverpool, and Manchester, to provide accessible higher education opportunities to a broader range of students. The term "red-brick" originated from the characteristic red brickwork often used in the construction of these universities' buildings.

Membership Criteria:

On the other hand, the Russell Group is a newer association of research-intensive universities in the UK. It was formed in 1994 and initially comprised 17 universities, which expanded to 24 member institutions by 2021. Membership in the Russell Group is based on research excellence, funding levels, and a commitment to delivering high-quality education. These universities are recognized for their strong research output, academic reputation, and global impact.

While there may be some overlap between Russell Group and Red-brick universities, not all Red-brick universities are part of the Russell Group. Some Red-brick universities, such as the University of Birmingham and the University of Manchester, are also members of the Russell Group, while others, like the University of Liverpool, are not part of the Russell Group.
