800th Anniversary

The University of Cambridge celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2009. It was founded in 1209 by a group of scholars fleeing Oxford, making it the world’s fourth-oldest surviving university.

The Centre for Gravity!

You already know how the city of Lincoln became famous among students and how sir Issac Newton realized the existence of gravity while sitting under a tree in his hometown, Lincolnshire. But do you know where he went to further educate himself and the world about gravity? It was at the University of Cambridge where he pursued the idea of gravity turning and published his paper on the theory of gravity in 1687.

Drinking Tradition

Pennying is one the most famous drinking custom-cum-game followed by the pupils of the University of Cambridge. Here, If a person puts a penny in your drink, you must aim for a bottoms-up. However, one may only penny another if they have an alcoholic drink themselves. Another version of Pennying is an “engineer’s penny,” where the pennies are bent so that they can fit atop a wine bottle. But beware, the bent pennies follow a risk; if you are found with one, you would have to down the entire bottle.

The Mathematical Bridge

The Mathematical Bridge in Cambridge is a unique historical landmark as it was the first bridge constructed with mathematical concepts. Built in 1749, it is also known as the Wooden Bridge, and it connects two areas of Queen’s College. Although often mistakenly attributed to Sir Isaac Newton, it was constructed by James Essex based on William Etheridge's plan. Its innovative design uses a sequence of tangents and radial members to create a self-supporting structure, and it remains an impressive example of the intersection between mathematics and engineering.

King’s College Chapel

The University of Cambridge boasts several stunning landmarks, such as King’s College Chapel, designed in 1446, and the mulberry tree under which John Milton allegedly wrote Lycidas. Christ’s College houses the tree, while Magdalene College has Samuel Pepys’s library in its original case. Christopher Wren designed chapels at Emmanuel and Pembroke, and the "Backs" of the colleges along the River Cam offer a beautiful blend of architecture, gardens, and river scenery, where students go boating.
